At Medical Transformation Center, we perform advanced lipid particle testing to determine patient risk for cardiovascular disease. A lipid panel measures the levels of a variety of specific lipids found in the blood. This FAQ is designed to help you determine if you should consider having a lipid panel, and to help you prepare for testing.
It is important for all men and women to assess their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. For those already diagnosed with the condition, lipid panels are an effective way to monitor treatment.
Even if you have no apparent risk factors, you should be tested. For adults not considered to have elevated risk, screening every four to six years is sufficient. Youths should have a screening between the ages of 9 and 11 followed by a second screening between ages 17 and 21. In cases where risk factors are present, or in situations where results showed high-risk levels, screening should be done at regular intervals.
As we mentioned earlier, a lipid panel measures the levels of specific lipids in the blood. Two important lipids you may have heard of, cholesterol and triglycerides, enter into the blood by way of phospholipid molecules. The test measures the density of the particles.
A little-known fact is that our bodies produce the cholesterol they need to function properly. However, some cholesterol comes from our diet, and poor eating habits can affect cholesterol levels in the blood. Excess cholesterol may cause plaque buildup on blood vessels, leading to narrowing and blocking of blood vessel openings. Ultimately, that can cause numerous health problems. Elevated levels of triglycerides in the blood raise the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is for that reason, among others, that lipid panels are essential.
At Medical Transformation Center in Louisville, KY we are passionate about patient health, preventative medicine, and early detection.
